When I announced that my something new for the day would involve wine on Instagram, I had more than one skeptical response. It’s true– wine is not a new thing. Though I’m still a light-weight when it comes to drinking, I have done my share of tasting. I’d like to say that I have gained a deep understanding of all things wine, but that would be a lie. I do, however, know what I like. And one of those things is discovering new wineries– particularly those close to home.
Yesterday, I discovered Malibu Wines. This is another one of those places that is entirely new to me– didn’t even know of its existence, despite having lived here for over a decade now. I have no idea why– the place is so much fun. They even do movie nights by the tasting areas. How I could have missed this place for so long, I don’t know, but I’m happy that I finally did find it.
I also learned something about Malibu– they can make some pretty tasty wine. I couldn’t imagine it prior to going, but, by and large, I actually preferred the local wines (Semler Flight) during the tasting.
I want to go back one early evening when it will be cooler and take a picnic. Yesterday it was a bit toastier than anticipated– I heard “Malibu” and thought coastal breezes (not so much), but the tasting area itself was still sheltered and very pleasant.
I’ve decided that it is the perfect place to ponder life’s choices– something my friends and I seem to be doing a lot of these days. I was hoping, as per the quote attributed to Ben Franklin in the tasting room, that wine would bring me wisdom. Now, I’m not saying Ben was wrong, but the day did not bring great wisdom– unless you count the acknowledgement that I need to visit again. But still, I needed the day away from the computer and the constant pressure to figure out my life (write something that sells, win lottery, takeover world, etc), and I’m glad that I went on the adventure.
