The other day we were talking about how noting three good things could have a positive impact on perspective and, therefore, mood. But there are certainly days where that’s not enough to really change the emotional tide. Those are the pampering days. Those are the days where I have to do something for myself in order to push through the bullshit and keep going.
There are some things that routinely work for me: cute animals doing adorable things (please see the picture of the penguin I’ve named Buddy), insanely good food, chocolate, a talk with my parents and friends (and yes, I count the boyfriend in that category). These things re-energize me. They refocus me so that I can see past the problems and petty annoyances and get back to productive life.
I’m not saying these things are revolutionary. I’m not even saying that these are long-term emotional “pick me ups.” But they do get me back on track, at least temporarily. They allow me to start working on solutions to problems rather than just dwelling on their existence.
What do you do to get yourself moving again? Do you have “go to” emotional fixes (that aren’t pharmaceutical)? Share!
