What Does Your Dream Date Drink?

Crisp Cider from Angry Orchard

On more than one occasion, my friends and I have wondered what it is that men are looking for in a woman on the first date. Okay, it was more than a fleeting ponder – more like one of those throw-your-hands-in-the-air-and-bang-your-head-on-the –desk reactions. Wee acknowledge that although we are all incredibly fabulous, sometimes the chemistry is just not there, and that a first date will sometimes just fizzle due to no particular fault of our own.

What we didn’t take into consideration was the possibility that what we were drinking might have played a part.

Wist, a fun new app for personalized food and drink recommendations, conducted a national survey that has posited the theory that men and women have strong opinions when it comes to dating and drinking.

“DRINKS:  On a date, most men think their “dream woman” will drink wine (35%) or a specialty cocktail like a Mojito or Margarita (26%).  Most guys don’t care for a girl who drinks beer (preferred by 18%), a well drink like a rum and Coke (15%), or a shot or shooter (only 1%).”

I rarely drink anything other than wine, so it’s clear that men were avoiding me for entirely different reasons. I can definitely understand why doing a shot would give off a “party girl” impression that might not be appealing to a man who is actually looking for someone to date. The beer factoid surprised me.

Los Angeles and the surrounding areas are big promoters of craft beers. There are tastings and secret beer clubs here.  People write sonnets about the beers at Steingarten (which has more than 100 different kinds). I would think any guy who spends quality time assessing the finer points of the latest German import, would actually think he had found his dream girl if she could recognize it on sight.  But maybe that is a second date reveal?

Apparently, women swing the other direction.

“DRINKS:  Most women want their “dream man” to nurse a well drink like a gin and tonic (33%) or knock back a cold beer (30%).  Most women don’t prefer a man who chooses wine (preferred by 19%), specialty cocktails (12%), or shots (only 4%).”

For me, it would definitely depend on the situation. If I am out at an upscale restaurant, a man who chooses a nice wine will not lose points. But I agree that if he started knocking back shots in order to get through the date, there probably wouldn’t be a second one.

So, what do you think? Does your dream date have a specific drink preference, or do you focus on how much he/she drinks on your date instead? Share your thoughts in the comments!

I am not sure I have a strong preference, but I would be concerned about a woman having multiple shots on the first date. On the other hand, if she mentioned she had written sonnets to some type of alcohol, I could imagine that being a strong positive.

I would be pretty impressed if a date composed some poetry about his drink of choice — definitely!
