Please Explain to Me: Ombre Hair

I’m trying a new occasional series here. The object is for you to explain to me a current trend/policy/word/phrasing that baffles me. Today’s trend that baffles me: Ombre Hair.

What is Ombre hair?

I see this happening on actresses and models all the time and my immediate thought is: “Surely, they can afford to get their roots done.”   Then I remember that they are doing it on purpose– even when it’s something that their characters would never be hip enough to do. I’m looking at you, Rachel Berry.

Lighter colors on the end of your hair just makes that hair look dry, or like you accidentally forgot to tie your hair back while painting.  I read a website that tried to sell me the idea that the look was “beachy casual.” Sure. If you were accidentally wading into an ocean full of bleach and only realized it after the bottom of your hair was unfortunately singed.

Why would I want to do this? How did this trend get started? Any chance it will stop?

I tried this look one time and couldn’t handle it. I did feel like I just needed to get my roots done and also my mother kept telling me I needed to get my roots done, lol. But, weirdly, I kind of like it on Rachel Bilson. As long as it’s subtle it can be pretty (sorry, Drew) on some people but not me.

Okay, good. If a fashionista like you can’t handle it, I don’t feel so bad. 🙂

I don’t get it either. My theory is that I’m too OCD to pull this look off… I couldn’t handle the ends being so different. This is also why I cannot partake in the “mullet” dress fad or any other asymmetrical looks. A coworker recently tried it and HATED it! She was back at the solon to get it fixed ASAP!

You would not believe how long it took me to realize that people were doing this on purpose. The red, pink or blue dips are pretty obvious. This look just always seemed like a mistake.
