Your Favorite Things

KateWavingThink back to when you first started dating your current partner, or, if you are single, your last partner. What was the thing that drew you to him/her? When you thought to yourself, “This could really be something,” what sparked the thought?

For me, it was conversation. On our first date, the boy and I talked for three hours. That’s an incredibly long time for me to talk to someone who was just one step beyond stranger. On the second date, the boy and I talked for two hours and only stopped because I had to be somewhere else. The pattern kept repeating. It made me much more inclined to lower the barriers a bit than a set of pretty eyes would have (though his eyes are very pretty). It still took me a while, of course, to be fully on board with the concept of dating, but being able to really talk to him was a gift. It still is!

Lifesavers…every week he came to my desk and brought me Lifesavers. Backup…first time he spoke with me, he asked when he could take me out for a drink…and I confidently claimed that I was a dinner kind of girl, not a “grab a drink then shag” kind of girl. So he started to bring me Lifesavers & stand around & talked to me & made me laugh and made me think and made me dream. Once a week, every week, for a year! Every couple weeks he’d ask me to dinner & I’d refuse, but the Lifesavers kept on coming. That was 22 years and 51 weeks ago. And every once in awhile he’ll pull a pack of Lifesavers out of his pocket and offer me one. And I still always take it. After dinner, of course…!

ba dum dum….kshhh….!!! 😉 “She’s here ’til Thursday, folks!” It really is a sweet thing – especially after we have a spat, it always brings us back & reminds us of where & why we started and that is one of the greatest gifts ever.

Ahhhhh – the reasons we were first attracted to our partners?? A slippery slope of a question. I’m not sure if I have ever, whole-heartedly believed the well known saying: “that what attracts you initially will be the things that most annoy you later in the relationship”.
As an ‘old broad’ who has been married nearly 22 years, I feel like we fall in love with a feeling, with a hunch, maybe even a gamble, that (as the 21 year old people we were when we discussed marriage) if your heart and head have directed you well, those initial hunches become reality and the person we feel inclined to trust, is truly trustworthy, loving, and respectful.

I started dating my hubby while still in college. I was an RA at the time. Our first date was a lunch at the fountains near the MU at ASU. We talked for two hours straight. Apparently, I was so engrossed with the conversation that one of my residents confronted me later that night, saying that he was yelling my name and trying to get my attention, but I was talking to “some guy.” I could just get that lost in conversation with him 🙂

What a great story! Are you ever tempted to re-enact it?
